Don’t graduate without taking the time to explore the world. Summer is an especially inviting time to study in a foreign country. The weather is warm, people are relaxed, and many things are more informal. Syracuse University Abroad offers students a choice of over 40 accredited summer programs around the world. Best of all, we have programs which journey to multiple cities!

I want to tell you about a program which might interest you.

Italian Film Studies and Restoration in Bologna. Attend the world’s most famous classic film festival event, Cinema Ritrovoto, while immersing yourself in all aspects of film. This program is based on a total filmmaker/film studies approach in which students are engaged in the study of Italian film history along with that of script writing, visual strategy, pre-production planning, and production. Students will generate filmmaking ideas based on their study of Italian filmmakers such as Fellini, Bertolucci, Antonioni, and Scola and will incorporate what they learn into their own worldviews and filmmaking interests. Students will engage in independent research and internship activities with professional film restorers and researchers at the Cineteca of Bologna.

Anna Fleury - Best-in-Show MovingMedia 2011

Anna Fleury got the Best of Show Honors for her “Love Succinctly” as part of the 'Moving Media' competition during the Detroit-Windsor International Film Festival. Fleury is a graduate student at Wayne State University. The 13 minute short only had a nine member crew. Fleury is currently directing the Michigan Creative Film Alliance presentation of "Beauty Queen".

ATTENTION all next generation of TV Hosts, Journalists, Photographers & Media Gurus. The MANHATTAN SHORT Journalism & Multimedia Competition deadline to register is September 15th 2011.

Thank you to those in Australia, Poland, England and St Petersburg , Russia who have already sent in Applications. We regret to inform you that this particular Competition is restricted to the USA for its first year of operation. However, we will be expanding it to the rest of the world in 2012, and that is going to be electric, so please consider resubmitting your applications in the coming year.

For those of you finding out about this competition for the first time.

Here's how the competition works: We select MEDIA TEAMS. Each Team must contain four elements:

1: A Social Media Producer

2: TV Reporter / Host / Hostess

3: A Journalist / Team Writer

4: Cameraman / Photographer

Each Media Team around the country are given an Online-Media Channel click here to see a template: Their Assignment: Report on MANHATTAN SHORT in their own town. Each Media Team will receive access to interview some of the filmmakers as well as staff at MANHATTAN SHORT.

Judging categories include Best Print Review (200-250 words); Best 3 Minute Video Interviews. ( What did people vote for and why etc.); Best Photo and Best Social Media Producer (One that ignites online-debate with their audience and markets the media channel on other networks such as FaceBook, Twitter etc).

Michigan Creative Film Alliance - Applications

The Michigan Creative Film Alliance is currently accepting applications from Wayne State University students for the 2011 Summer Film Project (COM 5384 sec.001 spring/summer term).

There is a fast deadline for applications: April 21, 2011 (Click Here to Download).

10 students from the CFPCA will be selected to work with their counterparts at the University of Michigan and Michigan State on the production of a short narrative film.

Eligibility: Juniors, Seniors and graduate students who are majoring in Film, Media Arts and Studies or film-related disciplines (e.g.Theatre, Music, Art & Art History, & Communication majors with skills in public relations, scenic design, costume design, sound recording, sound design, multimedia design, motion graphics in the CFPCA are eligible to apply). Students who received degrees in Dec. 2010 in these disciplines are also eligible to apply.

Wayne State University and Detroit Public Television (DPTV), WTVS Channel 56, today announced the launch of a new Midtown Detroit studio at 5057 Woodward Ave. The studio is located in the landmark Maccabees Building, owned by Wayne State. The studio was once home to WXYZ-TV Channel 7 and the official birthplace of the iconic “Soupy Sales Show.”

“This WSU–DPTV studio collaboration creates an opportunity for us to bring TV production back to Midtown,” said Matthew Seeger, interim dean of the Wayne State College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. “In addition to revitalizing the historic relationship that existed between Wayne State and WTVS through the late 1970s, the new studio will serve as a training ground for our media arts students, many of whom plan to stay in Michigan after graduation and become part of the state’s growing TV and film industry.”

In the 1950s and 1960s, Wayne State’s University Television co-produced educational, entertainment, and public affairs programs with DPTV. Today that partnership continues with the Wayne State University School of Business and DPTV co-production of “Leaders on Leadership,” an Emmy award–winning talk show that delves into the success strategies of globally significant CEOs and newsmakers.

The studio will be the new venue for taping “Leaders on Leadership,” which is currently produced at St. Andrews Hall on the Wayne State University campus. In preparation, the studio will undergo a phased renovation that includes the addition of new equipment and enhanced capabilities like the origination of live programming for transmission to DPTV from the studio. “Leaders on Leadership” will feature a live taping of Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour as part of the official March 25th opening of the studio.

DPTV will use its high-definition remote truck to provide production facilities for the studio until permanent equipment is installed. The truck will also be used for student instruction. DPTV will establish internships for Wayne State students that combine hands-on educational instruction with opportunities to produce content for the station.

Upon completion of the studio, DPTV and Wayne State will expand their collaboration beyond “Leaders on Leadership” and potentially partner to produce DPTV’s local public affairs shows, such as “Am I Right” and “American Black Journal.” DPTV will continue to operate permanent studios in its Wixom headquarters, in addition to the new Detroit studio.

According to Rich Homberg, president and general manager of Detroit Public Television, the new Midtown studio will play an important role in engaging the community and leadership organizations to tackle the city’s toughest challenges – children and education, arts and culture, energy and the environment, leadership and public affairs, and health issues.

“With both a radio operation (WRCJ 90.9 FM, managed by DPTV for the Detroit Public Schools in the Detroit School of Arts) and now again a television operation in Detroit, a new headquarters building and the state’s only full, high-definition production truck, Detroit Public TV is well positioned to serve Metro Detroit and beyond,” said Homberg. “With the new studio collaboration, we are proud to build on our historic relationship with Wayne State University.”

Dear Friends in Academia:

As Governor Snyder's budget proposal sent a seismic jolt to Michigan's burgeoning film & digital media industry, potentially killing it altogether, most, if not everyone in the state's industry has been engaged in organizing evidence and in dialogue with legislators, media, friends and family to prevent the budget from passing as proposed.

Since one of Snyder's voiced primary objectives is to stem the brain drain of our youth (Yes, the irony is deafening.), we thought it would be good to illustrate how large and committed the collegiate audience is, now pursuing this industry as a career in Michigan, and the potential loss of talent if the film industry disappears.

The Michigan Film Office Advisory Council (MFOAC) a separate entity from the Film Office itself, is holding a public meeting this Friday morning in downtown Lansing, and we thought it a great opportunity for all interested students (and faculty) to display en masse what is now at risk.

We have created a special Facebook page for the meeting with the exact details, so if you could please pass on to your students, who can rsvp on it, we'll have a general idea of attendance, from which I will alert the local press. A nice little army on display would surely have a grand effect. Fortunately we do have a media pool very interested in this program, and its effect on the state, plus we have seen prelim signs that Gov. Snyder has already underestimated the level of passion and objection to his proposal.

My name is Torie J. Anderson from the Wayne County 4-H Mentoring Program. We are currently in the process of recruiting volunteers for our Tech Wizards Media/Film Program which will begin March 2011. The volunteers will lead/ instruct kids on the basics of film and media production, with the equipment (computers, cameras etc...) provided by the Wayne County 4-H Mentoring Program.

The project is youth driven and will focus on documenting the needs and issues that they see in their community. In addition to the personal satisfaction obtained from mentoring, volunteers will receive a stipend of $10.60 per hour plus gas mileage reimbursement. Interested staff and students are highly encouraged to apply as this can be taken on as a research based group project.

I have attached a program flyer with the hopes that you may be able to post it and pass this information along. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with an amazing group of kids while gaining community service experience in the field. The Harry Ransom Center, an internationally renowned humanities research 
library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin, annually awards 
over 50 fellowships to support research projects in all areas of the 
humanities.  Each year, the Robert De Niro Endowed Fund, Warren Skaaren 
Film Research Endowment, and Filmscript Acquisitions Endowment fund a 
number of projects focusing on the Center's film collections.
 
The Center's film collections include the papers of producers David O. 
Selznick and Lewis Allen, actors Gloria Swanson and Robert De Niro, 
screenwriters Ernest Lehman and Paul Schrader, acting teacher Stella Adler, 
special effects master Norman Dawn, and the Interstate Theatre Circuit,

The fellowships range from one to three months, with stipends of $3,000 per

Richard Chew is the inaugural holder of the Bob Allison (Allesee) Endowed Chair in Media in Wayne State University’s Department of Communication. He will be in residence as a visiting faculty member for six weeks during the spring 2011 term.

The 7pm program includes a conversation with Richard Chewpreceded by a highlight reel of his work. The program is hosted by the DIA's curator of film and performing arts, Elliot Wilhelm. At 8pm, enjoy a screening of one of the films that influenced Chew's remarkable career: Nothing But a Man (1964) starring Ivan Dixon,Yaphet Kotto and Abbey Lincoln. The evening concludes with a dessert afterglow.

Chew is a renowned editor with a 45 year career in feature films and documentaries. He won Academy Awards for his work on The Redwoods (Best Short Documentary, 1967) and Star Wars (1977). He was nominated for the Academy Award for his work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). He won British BAFTA awards as co-editor on The Conversation (1974) and on Cuckoo’s Nest. His work onShanghai Noon (2000) was nominated for Best Feature Comedy by American Cinema Editors. Among his other notable films are Goin’ South (1978), Risky Business (1983), Clean and Sober (1988), Singles(1992), Waiting to Exhale (1995), Hope Floats (1998), I Am Sam(2001) and Bobby (2006).

MICHIGAN CREATIVE FILM ALLIANCE

CALL FOR SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS

The Michigan Creative Film Alliance, comprised of students and faculty from Wayne State University, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, is now looking for the screenplay that will be produced in the summer of 2011.

Script submissions can either be in the form of a short (20 to 30 pages) or a full-length screenplay that will ultimately be turned into a short as was the case with the 2010 production of Appleville.

Each university will select two finalists. A panel of judges will determine the winner that will be announced at the premiere of Appleville on March 30, 2011 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

If the chosen script is feature length, the writer will be expected to re-write and deliver a draft script by April 30^th. In all cases, the winner should expect to do plenty of rewriting in collaboration with members of the production team during early summer prior to shooting.

SCRIPT SUBMISSION DUE DATE: JANUARY 17, 2011

All scripts need to be in standard screenplay format.

Only undergraduate or graduate students at MSU, WSU and UofM may enter. Students who graduate in December 2010 or May 2011 are eligible.

2011 Student Academy Awards®
Competition Now Underway

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is now accepting entries for the 2011 Student Academy Awards competition. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, along with cash prizes, may be awarded to U.S. student filmmakers in the following categories: Alternative, Animation, Narrative and Documentary.

The Academy also announced a change in its foreign film category. Since 1981, the Academy has recognized student filmmakers from abroad by presenting a single Honorary Foreign Film award. This year, up to three foreign films will be honored with medals, the same as in the individual U.S. categories.

The U.S. competition is open to all full-time college and university students whose films are made within the curricular structure of a film program or class at their respective schools. The application for entry is available online at: http://www.oscars.org/saa. U.S. entries must be submitted by Friday, April 1, 2011.

The foreign film competition is also open to full-time college and university students, however, in this category entries are accepted only from schools that are members of the International Film Organization known as CILECT, and located outside the borders of the United States. The deadline to submit a foreign student film for consideration is Friday, March 25, 2011.

On Saturday, June 11, 2011, the 38th Annual Student Academy Awards presentation will be held at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level. Earlier this year, at the 82nd Academy Awards, former Student Academy Award winner Pete Docter took home the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film for "Up." Gregg Helvey, a 2009 Student Academy Award winner, was a nominee in the Live Action Short Film category for "Kavi." Since the program's inception, Student Academy Award winners have gone on to earn 40 Oscar nominations and have won or shared in seven Academy Awards.

Leaving electronic equipment in the cold weather causes condensation on internal mirrors, lenses, lighting equipment and other EXPENSIVE things. The camera lens can fog up, batteries will lose power more quickly than usual and condensation may form on all parts of the camera. The LCD and any other camera displays may flicker in and out.

When the temperature is at or below the freezing point, melted snow on the lens can freeze and potentially cause damage. Don’t breathe on your digital camera either as the water droplets from your breath causes condensation that can freeze. Wipe off any moisture immediately with a lint-free cloth.

Bringing a digital camera in from the cold

When bringing the camera inside from the cold, give it time to adjust to the room temperature. First put the camera in an unheated room for about a half hour before bringing it into a warm area. Also place it inside a camera bag to help minimize condensation.

If condensation forms on the camera, stop using it immediately to prevent damage. Remove the battery, memory card and lens cap, keep compartment doors open and don’t use the camera until the condensation evaporates.

It’s better not to take the camera out into the cold again until the condensation is completely gone. The moisture may freeze causing permanent damage.

So this means that another student can get electrocuted or broken glass that can occur from an extreme change in temperature. Second of all, equipment left in your car overnight can get stolen. We are living in very tough times and some people will do anything to get a buck. So, keep valuables out of sight if you have to leave them in your vehicle momentarily.

Youth Neighborhood News, a youth-led and youth-produced television news program focusing on positive stories about Detroit, is in need of a Paid Student Intern. This internship requires the applicant to assist the primary instructor and work with students in the production of a youth TV news program and packages. The Intern will be exposed to a professional work environment and professional broadcast equipment.
The Intern will be working at YouthVille Detroit with YNN student journalists and, on occasion, chaperoning students on off-site video shoots. The Intern will also be responsible for the post-production of all news packages and TV shows as well as posting them to YNN’s YouTube Channel.
The YNN class meets on a regular basis from 4pm until 6:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and alternating Fridays. Additional time may be required for videotaping and editing.

Requirements:
o College Student currently enrolled in Media-related Courses
o Own Reliable Transportation
o Ability to Work Flexible Hours (up to 10 hours per week)
o Desire to Work with Middle and High School Students
o Knowledge of TV Studio Equipment
o Knowledge of EFP/ ENG Video Equipment
o Knowledge of Non-Linear Video Editing Systems
(Specifically Adobe Premiere CS4)
o Knowledge of Television News Style Editing

UM, MSU, WSU summer film institute opens Wednesday

ROSS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm says the state's Big Three public universities are strengthening Michigan's burgeoning movie industry by collaborating to train students in film making.

The 2010 Creative Film Alliance Summer Film Institute opened Wednesday and runs for eight weeks. It's being held at the KBS Conference Center on Gull Lake in Kalamazoo County's Ross Township, about 120 miles west of Detroit.

The program staff includes Hollywood professionals and university faculty. The students come from the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State universities.

Michigan's film initiative includes large tax breaks for moviemakers and has resulted in a big influx of movie production.
